• What Is PQQ ?
PQQ, the full name is pyrroloquinoline quinone. Like coenzyme Q10, PQQ is also a coenzyme of reductase. In the field of dietary supplements, it usually appears as a single dose (in the form of disodium salt) or in the form of a product combined with Q10.
The natural production of PQQ is very low. It exists in soil and microorganisms, plants and animal tissues, such as tea, natto, kiwifruit, and PQQ also exists in human tissues.
PQQ has many physiological functions. It can promote new mitochondria in cells (mitochondria are called "energy processing plants of cells"), so that the speed of cell energy synthesis can be greatly increased. In addition, PQQ has been confirmed in animal and human studies to improve sleep, lower cholesterol levels, reduce oxidative stress, prolong life, promote brain function and relieve inflammation.
In 2017, a research team composed of Professor Hiroyuki Sasakura and others from Nagoya University in Japan published their research results in the journal "JOURNAL OF CELL SCIENCE". The coenzyme pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) can prolong the life of nematodes.
• What Are The Health Benefits of PQQ ?
PQQ Promotes Mitochondria
In an animal study, researchers at the University of California found that PQQ can promote the production of healthy mitochondria. In this study, after taking PQQ for 8 weeks, the number of mitochondria in the body more than doubled. In another animal study, the results showed that immunity was significantly reduced and the number of mitochondria was reduced without taking PQQ. When PQQ was re-added, these symptoms were quickly restored.
Relieve inflammation and prevent arthritisAntioxidant & nerve protection
The elderly are often troubled by arthritis, which is also an important factor leading to disability. Studies have shown that the overall mortality rate of patients with rheumatoid arthritis is 40% higher than that of the general population. Therefore, the scientific community has been actively seeking ways to prevent and relieve arthritis. A study recently published in the journal Inflammation shows that PQQ may be the arthritis savior that researchers have been looking for.
In a human clinical trial, scientists simulated chondrocyte inflammation in a test tube, injected PQQ into one group of cells, and did not inject the other group. The results showed that the level of collagen degrading enzymes (matrix metalloproteinases) in the group of chondrocytes that were not injected with PQQ increased significantly.
Through in vitro and in vivo studies, scientists have found that PQQ can inhibit the release of inflammatory factors by fibrotic synovial cells in joints, while inhibiting the activation of nuclear transcription factors that cause inflammation. At the same time, scientists have also found that PQQ can reduce the activity of specific enzymes (such as matrix metalloproteinases), which break down type 2 collagen in joints and damage joints.
Antioxidant & nerve protection
Studies have found that PQQ has a neuroprotective effect on rat midbrain neuronal damage and Parkinson's disease caused by rotenone.
Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress have been shown to be the two main culprits of Parkinson's disease (PD). Studies have shown that PQQ has a strong antioxidant effect and can protect against cerebral ischemia by resisting oxidative stress. The oxidative stress response is considered to be one of the most important pathways leading to cell apoptosis. PQQ can protect SH-SY5Y cells from rotenone (neurotoxic agent)-induced cytotoxicity. Scientists used PQQ pretreatment to prevent rotenone-induced cell apoptosis, restore mitochondrial membrane potential, and inhibit the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS).
In general, in-depth research on the role of PQQ in physical health can help humans better prevent aging.
