Bacillus coagulans is a gram-positive bacterium belonging to the phylum Firmicutes. Bacillus coagulans belongs to the genus Bacillus in taxonomy. The cells are rod-shaped, gram-positive, with terminal spores and no flagella. It decomposes sugars to produce L-lactic acid and is a homolactic fermentation bacterium. The optimal growth temperature is 45-50℃ and the optimal pH is 6.6-7.0.
